G.G. MOORE PARK INITIATIVE

ABOUT G.G. MOORE PARK

AND GEORGIA G. MOORE

Located at 626 M Street in South Louisville, G.G. Moore Park honors Georgia G. Moore (1864-1915), a trailblazing Black educator, poet, and suffragist. Known as the “Phillis Wheatley of Kentucky” for her literary and advocacy work, Moore was a fierce champion for education, civil rights, and women’s voting rights. She taught at the Western Colored School and made history in 1914 by winning a public debate on women’s suffrage.

The park sits on the historic site of the South Louisville Colored School, which opened in 1899 and moved to this location in 1907. Renamed the Georgia G. Moore School in 1918, it remained a cornerstone of Black education until its closure in 1956.

WHY G.G. MOORE PARK?

G.G. Moore Park was named one of Parks For All’s Top 10 Priority Parks, highlighting the urgent need for investment. The park has had no capital investment in more than two decades, and is located in a community that stands to benefit substantially from an exceptional park in their neighborhood.

In partnership with Councilwoman Shameka Parrish-Wright and Louisville Parks and Recreation, we’re revitalizing the park to honor Moore’s legacy and foster a vibrant space for learning, gathering, and connection.
